Bali rice terraces

The emerald-green rice terraces in the river gorge north of Tegallalang village in central Bali (see photo) are generally considered to offer travelers the best photo opportunity. Other popular lush-green and well-tended Balinese rice paddy sites include those in the Ubud area (including Sayan) -- and in Pupuan, Jatiluwih. Tabanan and Tirtagangga.

Emerald green rice terraces thrive throughout BaliThe Balinese rice terraces go back over 2,000 years when hard-working farmers with primitive hand tools began carving the stepped terraces out of steep hill sides. Generation after generation has extended and kept them in meticulous shape out of necessity - rice is the staple food of the islanders.

Gamelan music of Bali

Nothing is more mesmerizing than the haunting percussion sounds of a Balinese gamelan orchestra. The musicians play an assortment of instruments including native metal gongs, drums, chimes, cymbals and metalophones (xylophones).

Alas Kedaton Monkey Forest

The Sacred Monkey Forest is always a fun stop on our Bali ToursAlas Kedaton is a small forest with a cluster of towering trees and home to hundreds of sprite monkeys. The forest and all tame monkeys are considered to be sacred. For many years no one has been permitted to chop the wood nor catch any of the monkeys

Jatiluwih

This area around Batukau is one of great scenery beauty. There is a tiny road from wongaya gede across steep rice terraces. The view of here is fantastic, above hill and slopes with steep rice terraces all around.

Batubulan Village: Home of the Barong

Ten km northeast of Denpasar, Batubulan is a village known throughout Bali for its ornate door-guardian statues, carved of soft paras volcanic tuff. Until these became popular for secular use earlier in this century, the carvings were only used in temples or palaces, but this artform has spread extensively in recent years and is today found in homes and public buildings. Batubulan is also home to three famous Barong

Peliatan Village: home of legendary legong

Bali traditional dance is dramatic and highly ritualized.Dances of Bali

Ramayana

Most Balinese dances relate to segments of the Ramayana, an ancient Hindu epic illustrating the perpetual struggle between good and evil.

The three favorite dances in Bali are:

Barong
A classic dance. Stunning. Depicts the conflict between the good Barong (dressed in a fanciful lion-like costume) and the evil Rangda.

Legong
Another classic dance. Graceful. Performed by three pre-pubescent girls in colorful attire.

Kecak (Monkey Dance)
The Kecak is convincingly rooted in Balinese tradition. Typically, it features 50 to 100 bare-chested men sitting cross-legged in tight concentric circles. They play the role of monkeys, which is why the dance is sometimes called the "monkey dance". As they sway in unison, they repeatedly chant the nonsensical phrase "kechak ke chakî virtually non-stop and without musical accompaniment. They do this in a hypnotic beat to scare away an evil spirit. Several Balinese dancers help dramatize the story.

They entertain and uplift your spirit. Both art forms have been performed and acclaimed in major cultural centers around the world. Experiencing them in Bali is the ultimate experience.
